After a joyous April exploring the Lamp Transmission Record by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, we are delighted to have the NTI Lecturers join the community for the month of May to share their wisdom.
NTI President Alistair Noble will reflect on Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s One-Stroke Calligraphy “Wisdom and Innovation”: a message for 2026 and beyond.
Alistair writes:
“On my first visit to Nan Tien Institute, in 2025, I was struck by a particular piece of Master Hsing Yun’s one-stroke calligraphy in the exhibition on the ground floor. It translates as ‘Wisdom and Innovation’ or perhaps ‘Wisdom and Creativity’. I’ve thought a lot about this over the first months of my work as President of NTI—it seems like a good motto for an education institute! In this short discussion, I will share some reflections on this motto and what it might mean for us all, today and in the future”
Two questions Alistair has posed for us to discuss:
- Think about something you do that is creative—it might be as simple as singing in the car, or baking a cake, or gardening. Why do you do this? What is the motivation?
- Think of a challenging decision you have to make… If you tried to balance wisdom and creativity in finding a solution (e.g. asking yourself the questions: is this solution wise? Is it creative?) Would this help to solve the problem or make it more difficult?
