“Realize that this world is impermanent and that nations are dangerous and fragile. The four great elements lead to suffering and are empty and the five aggregates are without a self. All things arise, cease, change, and become different……..”

(The First Realization of the Eight Realizations of a Bodhisattva Sutra)

Aniruddha, an early disciple, asked the Buddha for guidance to give lay followers wanting to limit our suffering on the way to enlightenment. The Buddha determined that we need to understand the status of the world and our responsibility. Thus, The Eight Realizations of a Bodhisattva Sutra is available for our contemplation.

For the next two weeks we will explore the meaning of the First Realization, the Buddha’s perspective of this world – the world of nations and our inner world.

This week, we will focus on the fragility of nations and contemplate the following:

  1. What causes the chaos in nations?
  2. What is our responsibility in the cause and the way out?
  3. What one thing can I do to lessen the devastation?
